Postnatal Physiotherapy/ 4Mum

Why postnatal physiotherapy?

It would be beneficial for all women to have a physiotherapy review post-natally, no matter the method of delivery. It would be ideal to book your physiotherapy review following the GP 6 week check up (if possible).

For some women, a single check up is all they require, to ensure that they are recovering well. These women do well with some advice and an exercise plan to set them on the right path, and might not require further treatment.

For others, they may require more intensive physiotherapy input to ensure that they have the appropriate treatment at the right time to support their journey to recovery. There are a number of issues that can arise as the result of a difficult pregnancy or delivery.

Postnatal symptoms can include:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Constipation
  • Lower back pain/upper back pain
  • Feelings of heaviness/ prolapse symptoms
  • Feeling generally weaker and struggling to build back to usual form of exercise
  • Abdominal weakness/DRA
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction

I offer a thorough assessment for the post-natal woman, which includes the following:

  • Postural assessment
  • Biomechanical review
  • Back and hip assessment
  • Abdominal review/ diastasis check (DRA)
  • Pelvic floor examination/internal assessment
  • Comprehensive history and discussion around symptoms

Treatment can include:

  • Advice
  • Education
  • Support for C-section/episiotomy recovery
  • Exercise programme and progression plan
  • Manual therapy
  • Massage

There is no time limit to when you can have a post-natal physiotherapy review.

I would suggest that you not bring your baby to your appointment. This is to ensure that you get the most from your appointment. It is difficult to get through the full assessment and treatment in the time allocated if the baby is present, and I want you to get the most from your session.

Please wear comfortable clothing that you can move in e.g. sports clothing (leggings /shorts, tshirt, bra).
